Olivia de Havilland & Joan Fontaine

Al parecer fueron rivales desde niñas, con Olivia (la hermana mayor) como protagonista de su propio cuento de hadas, mientras Joan quedaba relegada a un segundo puesto. Las humillaciones por parte de su madre y su hermana mayor fueron una constante en la vida de la joven Fontaine, con incluso una violación por parte de su propio padre. No serían menos en Hollywood. Ambas lucharon por el papel de Melania Hamilton en Lo que el viento se llevó, que ganó Olivia, así como por Rebecca, que ganó Joan. En 1941, fueron las primeras hermanas en ser nominadas al Oscar por Mejor Actriz en la misma edición. Olivia por Si no amaneciera, Joan por Sospecha. En esta ocasión ganó Joan, quien, sentada al lado de su hermana, sintió renacer todo el rencor guardado hacia su hermana desde su infancia y rechazó sus felicitaciones. En 1949 Olivia de Havilland ganaría su segundo Oscar por La heredera, pero la vieja enemistad persistió. Al parecer, ambas hermanas no se hablan desde 1975, cuando según Joan Fontaine su hermana no la invitó al funeral de su madre, y según Olivia de Havilland su hermana no acudió porque estaba muy ocupada. En 1987 la organización de los Oscar cometió el error de alojarlas en habitaciones contiguas en el mismo hotel, así como de encerrarlas en la misma limusina. A lo primero Joan respondió cambiando de cuarto. A lo segundo, apeándose del coche y caminando a la ceremonia. Fontaine aseguró que aquellos serían "mis últimos Oscar". Siendo ambas lo longevas que son (95 y 94 años respectivamente), tiempo han tenido suficiente para arreglar sus diferencias, pero nada indica que lo vayan a hacer.

In 1941, they were the first siblings to be nominated as Best Leading Actress in that year Oscar's edition. Olivia's nomination was for Hold Back The Dawn, Joan's for Suspicion. This time Joan won the award who, seated next to her sister, felt the old resentment back again and rejected her sister's congratulations. 1946 will be Olivia's chance to win her Oscar for To Each His Own, and Joan the one to give it to her. Thinking this will be the time for reconciliation, Hollywood got speechless when Olivia rejected to even shake her sister's hand. In 1949 Olivia will win another Oscar for The Heiress, but the ancient enmity persisted. It seems both sisters are in no speaking terms since 1975, when according to Joan's version her sister didn't invite her to their mother's funeral and, according to Olivia's, her sister was too busy to attend. In 1987 the Academy Awards organization made the mistake of booking them in the same hotel with rooms next to each other, and then stuck them together in the same limousine. First Joan switched her room, second she got out of the car and walked all the way, then she assured those would be the "last Oscars show for me". Being both so long-lived (95 and 94 respectively), they have had time enough to make it up, but it seems it won't simply happen.
