Un asesinato, unos besos con un chico negro (supuestamente un Santo revivido) y unas cruces ardiendo en la noche fueron suficientes para que el vídeo de Like a Prayer fuera censurado por medio mundo y la compañía de refrescos Pepsi cancelara con Madonna un contrato millonario.
Para ella, la polémica supuso una enorme publicidad, un éxito de ventas fenomenal y una indemnización millonaria.
A murder scene, some kissing with a black guy (supposed to be a Saint alive) and some crosses burning in the night were enough to make Like a Prayer censored throughout half of the world and that Pepsi cancelled a millionaire contract with Madonna.

Para dejar clara su postura, Madonna aparecería en televisión calificando el caso como que su versión "hace de menos" a la original, para luego tomarse un sorbito de té. Durante su gira MDNA, además incluye unas frases del tema durante su redención de Express Yourself, siguiendo con unos momentos de She's Not Me y acabar la polémica con unas sabias palabras de Nicki Minaj: "Sólo hay una reina y esa es Madonna, zorra".
Otras divas que han intentado tirarse a la chepa de Madonna son Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey o Elton John.
